Photographed at Suncheon-si in September 2025
From a vantage point above Suncheon Bay in Jeollanam-do, the late September afternoon reveals the vast tidal flats where the Dongcheon River empties into the South Sea, its sinuous channels catching fragments of overcast light. Low mountains frame the estuary on both sides, their slopes still holding the deep greens of late summer even as the reed beds below have begun their slow turn toward autumn gold. Suncheon Bay, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, sustains one of Korea's most important coastal wetland ecosystems, and from this elevation the interplay of freshwater, saltwater, and land reads like a living topographic map. The muted silver palette of sky and water lends the scene a meditative quiet that belies the ecological richness below.
