Seongsan Ilchulbong, Jeju's iconic volcanic tuff cone, dominates the frame as seen from a rocky tidal flat along Ilchul-ro. The crater's layered sedimentary walls display dramatic striations of gray, brown, and green where tenacious vegetation clings to every ledge and crevice. At the base, visitors wade through exposed tide pools on the volcanic rock shelf, their colorful hats and clothing tiny against the massive headland. The deep blue sea fills the space between the rocky foreground and the crater wall, with small waves breaking white against the basalt. Formed by an underwater eruption over 5,000 years ago, Seongsan Ilchulbong is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, and this view from the south shows its most dramatic cliff face, the geological layers reading like pages in the island's history.
