Photographed at Harye-ro, Seogwipo-si in October 2025
Along Harye-ro in Seogwipo-si, the coastal forest canopy frames a view where autumn-tinted broadleaf trees meet the open sky above the sea. Jeju's southern coast benefits from a subtropical microclimate that keeps vegetation lush well into October, the evergreen chinquapins and camellias maintaining their glossy foliage while deciduous species begin their color shift. The forest edge along this stretch of coast serves as a natural windbreak, sculpted by decades of exposure to the southwesterly winds that bring typhoons in summer and cold fronts in winter. Below the tree line, the volcanic coastline drops to meet water that runs deep close to shore, a characteristic of Jeju's southern coast where the continental shelf falls away steeply toward the deep East China Sea basin.
