Along Soesokkak-ro, the Hyodoncheon river corridor winds through dense forest in the cool, muted tones of a Jeju October afternoon. The water surface reflects the overhanging canopy in dark, mirror-like patches broken by the gentle current, while the volcanic basalt banks are covered in a thick layer of moss that thrives in the humid microclimate of the gorge. This section of the stream is part of the Soesokkak estuary system, where tidal influence reaches several hundred meters inland, creating a brackish zone that supports a unique assemblage of freshwater and marine organisms. The forest canopy creates an almost tunnel-like enclosure over the water, filtering the afternoon light into scattered emerald pools that give the scene its meditative, almost primordial character.
