A white cat sits perfectly still atop a traditional Jeju stone wall in Songsan-dong, its pale fur a quiet exclamation point against the dark volcanic basalt. The wall is built in the unmistakable Jeju style, rough lava rocks stacked without mortar, gaps left intentionally so the island's fierce winds pass through rather than topple the structure. Behind and above, dense subtropical bushes of camellia and pittosporum form an impenetrable green wall. Below the stonework, low tea plants or ground cover peek through. The portrait frame gives the cat an almost regal perch, surveying its territory from this ancient boundary marker between farm plots. Jeju's village cats are as much a part of the landscape as the stone walls themselves.
