Photographed at Songsan-dong, Seogwipo-si in May 2024
From an elevated hillside in Songsan-dong, Seogwipo-si, the volcanic island of Beomseom rises from the deep blue sea like a fortress of green. Palm trees crowd the foreground slope in subtropical profusion, their fronds overlapping in layers that could belong to Okinawa or the Philippines rather than South Korea. The island's sheer white rock cliffs meet its forest-draped summit in a dramatic two-tone divide. Scattered volcanic rocks breach the surface of the shallows around the island, and on a clear May day like this, the water transitions from near-black depths to vivid cobalt in a gradient visible even from this distance. Beomseom is uninhabited and protected, a marine sanctuary that Jeju residents point to with quiet pride.
