JejuFrom a slightly different position on the crater rim at Yeonpyeong-ri, dried grass stalks rise in the immediate foreground like natural calligraphy strokes, partially screening the panoramic view beyond. Through these organic frames, the landscape unfolds: the steep volcanic ravine drops to a cluster of white and pastel-colored buildings, then flattens into agricultural fields that reach the coastline. The sea stretches to the horizon where it meets a haze-softened sky. Wind turbines are faintly visible in the distance, dots of modernity against the ancient volcanic terrain. The dried stalks add a sense of being physically present at this viewpoint, standing in the wind-blown grass on an exposed ridge, rather than simply observing a postcard view. The warm May light gives the fields and village a honeyed quality.
