Hwaseong Haenggung Palace spreads its traditional wings across the winter plaza in Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, the complex's formal entrance gate centered in the frame beneath a pale January sky. The wide-open courtyard stretches toward the gate, its stone pavement recently cleared of snow and glistening faintly with residual moisture. Symmetrical rows of low buildings with dark tile roofs extend on both sides, following the axial layout that characterizes Joseon royal architecture. The fortress wall climbs the hillside beyond, its watchtowers visible above the palace roofline. Originally built as a temporary palace for King Jeongjo's visits to his father's tomb, Haenggung was destroyed during the Japanese occupation and meticulously reconstructed between 1996 and 2003.
