Along Paldalsan-ro in Namchang-dong, Paldal-gu, Suwon, an ancient stone watchtower of Hwaseong Fortress, known as a chisung, stands resolute against a dramatic winter sky of swirling clouds and a fading sunset. The impressive masonry showcases the military precision of the late Joseon era, with each stone block shaped to interlock perfectly without the use of mortar. Projecting directly from the main fortress wall, this defensive structure was designed to allow soldiers to shoot along the wall face at oncoming enemies. The cold January atmosphere adds a brooding, majestic grandeur to this centuries-old historical fortification.
