Photographed at Jeongjo-ro 906beon-gil, Buksu-dong, 팔달구, Suwon-si in January 2024
Along Jeongjo-ro 906beon-gil in Buksu-dong, Paldal-gu, Suwon, a traditional pavilion and watchtower of Hwaseong Fortress crown a pine-covered hilltop. Their tiled roofs curve sharply against an overcast January sky, surrounded by bare winter trees and dark evergreen foliage. The stone ramparts demonstrate precise Joseon-era joinery, with blocks fitted together without any mortar. King Jeongjo built Hwaseong to honor his father and to establish Suwon as a secondary capital. Even on the quietest winter days, this grand historical ambition remains clearly visible in the massive scale of the fortress and the remarkable craftsmanship of the architecture.
