Along Jeongjo-ro 906beon-gil in Buksu-dong, Paldal-gu, Suwon, a traditional pavilion and watchtower of Hwaseong Fortress crown a pine-covered hilltop. Their tiled roofs curve sharply against an overcast January sky, surrounded by bare winter trees and dark evergreen foliage. The stone ramparts demonstrate precise Joseon-era joinery, with blocks fitted together without any mortar. King Jeongjo built Hwaseong to honor his father and to establish Suwon as a secondary capital.
