Suwon Hwaseong Fortress walls wind through the winter landscape near Suwoncheon-ro in Buksu-dong, their weathered stone fortifications following the natural contour of the hillside. Bare deciduous trees stand sentinel along the ramparts, their skeletal branches framing views of the fortress watchtowers in the distance. The January light is crisp and directional, picking out every stone joint and lichen patch on the 18th-century masonry. Below the walls, the traditional neighborhood preserves its low-rise character, with hanok-style rooftops visible among the winter foliage. Built between 1794 and 1796 by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, Hwaseong is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that seamlessly integrates military architecture with the surrounding urban fabric of modern Suwon.
