Photographed at Paldalsan-ro, Gyo-dong, 팔달구, Suwon-si in January 2024
A carefully restored hanok in Gyo-dong, Suwon's Paldal-gu, presents its facade in the clear winter light with an almost graphic precision. The dark timber frame creates a strong grid pattern against white plaster panels, while the curved roof tiles add a flowing counterpoint to the rectilinear walls below. The building sits on a raised stone platform approached by wide steps, its entrance flanked by wooden columns that show the natural grain of the lumber. A traditional Korean paper lantern hangs near the doorway, the only decorative element in an otherwise austere composition. Gyo-dong's proximity to Hwaseong Haenggung has made it a focus of Suwon's cultural preservation efforts, and this hanok exemplifies the measured elegance of Joseon-era domestic architecture.
