Gangwon-doIn Sacheon-myeon on Gangneung's northern outskirts, the December forest presents itself in the layered greens of Korean coastal pine interspersed with the bare brown scaffolding of deciduous oaks and birches. The East Sea coast is nearby - close enough that salt air influences the vegetation and the light carries a reflective quality borrowed from the water's surface. Winter in Gangwon Province's coastal zone is milder than the mountainous interior, and the pine forests retain a vitality that mountain forests lose by mid-November. The understory is a tangle of dried ferns and fallen leaves, their bronze and copper tones warm against the cool green canopy overhead. A footpath or forest road traces through the scene, its surface covered in a thick layer of pine needles that cushions every step with a soft, resinous crunch.
