A second perspective from Anbandegi 2-gil reveals the highland plateau of Wangsan-myeon opening up as the road crests a ridge, snow-dusted peaks receding in successively lighter tones toward a horizon barely distinguishable from the pale winter sky. The December darkness is not yet complete, and the remaining ambient light gives the snow surface a faint blue luminescence that photographs as something close to moonlight. Wind-sculpted snowdrifts along the roadside reveal the prevailing direction of the mountain gales that make Anbandegi one of the most exposed settlements in Gangwon Province. The sparse vegetation - stunted pines and alpine shrubs - emerges from the snow in dark clusters that punctuate the otherwise featureless white expanse. At this elevation and season, the air is thin and bitingly cold, carrying none of the moisture that softens winter on the coast only thirty kilometers away.
