The mountain road of Anbandegi 2-gil climbs through Wangsan-myeon in Gangneung's highland interior, where fresh December snow has transformed the landscape into a monochrome study of white slopes and dark conifers. Anbandegi - literally 'a place shaped like a saddle' - sits at over 1,100 meters elevation and is one of Korea's highest inhabited settlements, where cabbage farmers work fields that in winter become some of the peninsula's most dramatic snow-scapes. The snow lies deep enough to muffle all sound, creating a silence so complete it becomes its own presence. Tire tracks from a single vehicle trace the road's path through the accumulation, the only evidence of human passage in an otherwise pristine winter wilderness. The mountain ridges beyond disappear into low cloud, their profiles suggested rather than seen in the gathering December darkness.
