Gangwon-doOn Haean-ro along the Donghaean Bicycle Path in Sacheon-myeon, the December East Sea opens up in a panorama of gray-blue water meeting a pale winter sky at a horizon so level it could have been drawn with a ruler. The coastal road hugs the shoreline here, separated from the waves by a low seawall and a strip of weather-worn rock that the tides have sculpted into smooth, rounded forms. Gangneung's stretch of the East Sea coast is famous for its clean water and dramatic sunrise views, though in midwinter the light is softer and more diffuse, arriving through a thin veil of high cloud that eliminates harsh shadows. A few pine trees lean seaward at angles shaped by decades of onshore wind, their dark silhouettes the only vertical elements in an otherwise horizontal composition. The bicycle path's surface gleams faintly with moisture from overnight frost that the afternoon sun has not yet fully burned away.
