Gangwon-doTall Korean red pines fill the frame from bottom to top in Sacheon-myeon, Gangneung-si, their dark twisted trunks rising through the canopy toward a vivid December sky of pure blue. The trees are mature specimens with thick, deeply furrowed bark and spreading crowns of dark green needles, the kind of coastal pine forest that has protected Korea's eastern shoreline for generations. Through gaps between the trunks, glimpses of sandy beach and the bright turquoise of the East Sea are visible, placing these trees in the narrow windbreak strip between the shore and the inland areas. The upward-looking composition transforms the pines into living columns, their branches creating an organic lattice pattern against the sky that filters sunlight into scattered bright spots on the forest floor below. These sonamu forests along Gangwon-do's coast were often planted by village communities centuries ago as protection against salt spray and winter storms, and today they serve as beloved walking corridors between beach parking areas and the shore itself. The portrait orientation captures the full vertical drama from root zone to sky.
