Photographed at Changhae-ro, Songjeongdong, Chodang-dong, Gangneung-si in October 2024
From an elevated viewpoint in Chodang-dong, Gangneung, a dense canopy of Korean pine forest fills the lower two-thirds of the frame, its dark green needles creating an almost uniform textured surface that rolls gently toward the coast. Beyond the pine tops, a thin strip of sandy beach is barely visible, and then the East Sea stretches to the horizon in bands of jade green near shore and deeper gray-blue further out. The October sky is overcast with high thin clouds, lending the entire scene a muted, contemplative quality. The East Coast's signature coastal pine forests, planted generations ago as windbreaks and now protected, create this distinctive layered landscape where you can stand above the trees and see the forest meet the sea in a clean horizontal line. Gangneung's Chodang-dong is known for its tofu restaurants and this particular stretch of pine forest that buffers the residential area from the ocean, a living infrastructure that is as functional today as it was centuries ago.
