Photographed at Misiryeongyet-gil, Toseong-myeon in December 2024
Misiryeongyet-gil - the old Misiryeong Pass road in Toseong-myeon - cuts through a landscape transformed by heavy December snowfall into a realm of pure white and deep shadow. The pass connects Inje on the western slope to Sokcho on the eastern coast, and before the tunnel was built in 2006 it was one of Korea's most treacherous winter mountain roads. Snow clings to every surface - tree branches, road signs, guardrails - with the heavy, sculptural quality that comes from temperatures hovering just below freezing. The road surface has been cleared to reveal dark asphalt, creating a stark graphic line through the white terrain. Conifers along the roadside bear their snow loads in graceful downward curves, their dark needles barely visible beneath the accumulation. The mountain silence at this elevation is absolute, broken only by the occasional crack of a branch releasing its frozen burden.
