Photographed at Misiryeongyet-gil, Toseong-myeon in December 2024
The jagged granite ridgeline of Seoraksan National Park rises in a dramatic wall of blue-gray stone against a clear December sky, the peaks dusted with snow that catches the last warm light of the afternoon in faint amber touches. Viewed from the Misiryeong Pass area in Toseong-myeon, the mountain's famous Dinosaur Ridge and surrounding pinnacles form an almost alpine silhouette, their vertical rock faces deeply shadowed on the north side while the south-facing surfaces glow with reflected daylight. The foreground shows the curved granite surface of a nearby ridge, placing the viewer at elevation and emphasizing the vertiginous drop between the observation point and the main Seoraksan massif. Deep ravines cut between the peaks, their forested slopes showing the dark patterns of evergreen and bare deciduous trees in winter. Seoraksan, at 1,708 meters the third-highest peak in South Korea, is the crown jewel of Gangwon-do's mountain landscape, and this winter view strips away the autumn foliage tourism to reveal the raw geological architecture that underlies the mountain's fame. The portrait frame captures the full vertical sweep from foreground rock through the sawtooth ridgeline to the pale sky above.
