Wonju-siAlong Yeowon-ro in Wonju, the late autumn landscape has reached the stage where color abandons the trees in waves, leaving some branches bare while others still cling to their last copper and amber leaves. The November light is low and warm, raking across the terrain at angles that emphasize every ridge and furrow in the agricultural fields flanking the road. Wonju sits in the Chungju Basin of Gangwon Province, and the surrounding mountains create a sheltered pocket where autumn lingers several days longer than on the exposed ridges above. A farmer's greenhouse catches the afternoon sun, its plastic sheeting glowing white against the muted earth tones surrounding it.
