Photographed at Yeowon-ro, Wonju-si in November 2024
The same ancient ginkgo tree in Wonju is captured from a different angle, this time looking directly up into its canopy from almost directly beneath the trunk. The entire frame is filled with ginkgo foliage in every stage of autumn transformation: bright lemon yellow at the outer edges where leaves catch full sun, deeper gold in the middle layers, and patches of still-green leaves closer to the trunk where the inner canopy retains summer's color longest. Dark branches create a fractal network of lines through the yellow, their irregular patterns giving structure to the otherwise overwhelming mass of color. A few patches of blue sky peek through where the canopy thins, providing the only cool contrast. The effect is immersive and almost disorienting, a vertical tunnel of yellow that eliminates horizon, ground, and context in favor of pure chromatic experience. Where the previous shot showed the tree as a landmark in a landscape, this one places the viewer inside the tree itself, surrounded by the specific golden light that only a mature ginkgo produces in early November.
