Photographed at Naksan 4-gil, Ihwa-dong, Seoul in February 2024
From Naksan 4-gil's elevated trail, the full sweep of Seoul's Ihwa-dong and Changsin-dong neighborhoods spreads out in a panorama of colorful low-rise rooftops, with Bugaksan and Inwangsan mountains rising beyond under a brooding February sky. Turquoise, green, brick-red, and white facades create a patchwork quilt of color, each small building pressed tight against its neighbor in the organic pattern of Seoul's older hillside districts. The overcast sky occupies the upper half of the frame, its layered clouds giving the scene dramatic weight. Pine branches peek into the lower foreground, grounding the viewer on the forested hillside trail. This is one of Seoul's great hidden panoramas, accessible only on foot along the restored Naksan fortress wall path, where the ancient city wall winds through residential neighborhoods that haven't fundamentally changed their intimate scale in generations.
