Photographed at Noksapyeong-daero, Yongsan 2(i)-ga-dong, Seoul in October 2024
A traditional Korean pavilion with dancheong-painted eaves and dark red pillars sits beneath a canopy of trees turning autumn gold along the Namsan mountain trail near Noksapyeong-daero. The pavilion's curved roof, decorated with the characteristic blue-green and red-orange geometric patterns of Korean temple painting, peeks out from beneath overhanging branches of ginkgo and maple showing every shade from still-green through chartreuse to bright yellow and burnt orange. Blue October sky is visible through the thinning canopy, its color intensified by the warm foliage surrounding it. The portrait orientation captures the vertical layering, from the architectural detail of the pavilion at the bottom through the branch work to the patches of sky above. These mountain pavilions, called jeong or nujeong, were built along Korean hiking trails and palace grounds for centuries as resting places where walkers could sit and compose poetry or simply absorb the view. In autumn their painted woodwork and the surrounding foliage enter into a dialogue of warm color that makes them the most photogenic structures in Korea's seasonal calendar.
