Photographed at Gwangju-si in February 2026
A hanok with its characteristic curved roofline sits partway down a forested slope near Namhansanseong, surrounded by the bare winter canopy of Gwangju-si. The dark timber frame and stone foundation anchor the building to the mountainside, while the natural landscape seems to flow around and through the structure. Clusters of evergreen pine provide contrast to the dominant gray-brown palette of the dormant deciduous forest. The February atmosphere is clear enough to see fine detail in the distant hills but soft enough to flatten the light across the entire scene. This is traditional Korean architecture understood as part of the mountain, not placed upon it.
