Photographed at Ansan 1-gil, Sonyang in March 2025
Deeper into the forest on Ansan 1-gil in Sonyang, the March light filters through the canopy of bare deciduous branches to create a delicate filigree of shadows on the trail surface below. The forest here is second-growth mixed woodland typical of Korea's eastern mountains - oaks, maples, and birches that were replanted after the Korean War's devastation and have now matured into a dense, multi-layered canopy. Where the sun penetrates fully, the ground shows the first mossy green patches emerging from winter dormancy, tiny signals of the transformation that will overtake the entire mountainside within weeks. The air at this elevation carries the clean, slightly resinous scent of pine mixed with the earthy dampness of thawing soil. Birdsong has returned - not yet the full summer chorus, but the tentative calls of resident species testing the lengthening days. The trail narrows as it enters a particularly dense section, the trees pressing close enough that their branches form a natural tunnel overhead.
