Photographed at Bijarim-ro, Jeju in December 2023
Bijarim-ro in Jeju leads through a dense corridor of ancient nutmeg yew trees, their gnarled trunks and evergreen canopy forming a living tunnel of deep green. The December light filters weakly through the thick foliage, casting the forest floor in a perpetual twilight of moss and fallen leaves. Stone pathways wind between the massive trunks, some of which are estimated to be over 800 years old, making this one of the largest and oldest nutmeg yew forests in the world. Ferns and understory plants thrive in the humid microclimate beneath the canopy. The atmosphere is cathedral-like in its silence and scale, a stark contrast to Jeju's windswept coastlines just kilometers away.
