Gwacheon-siForest paths in Daehak-dong glow under the last sunset light of an October evening, the canopy filtering the warm rays into pools of gold that illuminate patches of trail and undergrowth while leaving the surrounding forest in deep shadow. The layered greens of the forest retain their summer density at this elevation, the deciduous trees having not yet committed fully to their autumn transformation. Seoul's urban mountains exist in a peculiar ecological state, their forests managed and protected within city limits yet subjected to extraordinary foot traffic, creating trail corridors that are bare and compacted while the forest just meters away remains surprisingly wild. The warm sky visible through gaps in the canopy contrasts sharply with the cool green darkness below, producing an image that captures the transitional quality of Korean autumn at its most evocative.
