Photographed at Daehak-dong, Seoul in October 2025
As the October sun drops toward the western ridge of Gwanaksan, its light finds narrow corridors through the forest canopy in Daehak-dong, casting long golden beams across the understory while the rest of the slope falls into cool shadow. The interplay of warm direct light and blue ambient shade creates a visual temperature map across the mountainside, every illuminated patch glowing like stained glass against the darkened surroundings. The trees here, a mix of Korean pine, oak, and zelkova, are in the earliest stage of their autumn transformation, with isolated branches of amber and rust appearing among the dominant green. Gwanaksan's western face receives the most dramatic evening light of any mountain within Seoul, its granite outcrops catching fire in the last minutes of the day.
