Photographed at Samobawi, Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul in May 2025
The massive granite formation of Samobawi rock rises against a clear May sky on the western approach to Bukhansan National Park in Seoul's Pyeongchang-dong, its weathered surface showing the characteristic jointing and exfoliation patterns of Korean granitic geology. The rock face occupies most of the frame, its pale gray surface streaked with dark mineral stains and patches of lichen, while dense spring forest in vivid green crowds its base and flanks. In the background, additional granite ridges of Bukhansan are visible, their peaks creating a sawtooth skyline that defines Seoul's northern horizon. Most remarkably, a faint crescent moon is visible in the upper left of the clear blue sky, its pale disc providing an ethereal counterpoint to the solid geological mass below. Samobawi, whose name translates roughly to 'four-faced rock,' is one of the most popular intermediate hiking destinations on Bukhansan's western routes, offering panoramic views of both the mountain interior and the urban sprawl of Seoul and Goyang-si to the south and west. The rock's scale is difficult to appreciate without the tiny figures of climbers visible at its base, and its smooth, rounded form contrasts with the jagged peaks visible beyond, illustrating the variety of erosion patterns present within a single mountain system.
