Photographed at Samobawi, Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul in April 2024
The famous Samobawi rock formation at Bukhansan presents its most dramatic face: a massive rectangular granite boulder perched impossibly atop a rounded base of weathered stone, as if placed there by a giant's hand. The rock's surface is etched with deep vertical cracks and wind-smoothed contours, each line recording millions of years of geological time. Behind and below, only clear blue April sky and the faintest hint of distant mountain ridges provide context. The formation's name means 'four-faced rock' in Korean, referring to its different appearances from each cardinal direction. This close-up portrait perspective emphasizes the boulder's precarious balance and monumental scale, the rough granite texture filling most of the frame. Samobawi sits at approximately 552 meters elevation on the trail between Gugi-dong and Bibong, and reaching it requires a moderately challenging hike that rewards climbers with this improbable natural sculpture.
