Gullfoss in Iceland, taken from the slope above, with the river entering from the left and plunging into the gorge to the right. Spray rises from the base of the upper cascade and hangs in a soft veil beside the rock shelf in the middle. The nearer lip of the falls is wet and white, and in the foreground the ground is coated with a pale crust scattered with dark stones. On the left, a thin path edged in white curves down the shadowed hill. Clouds are tinted gold and gray, and the far plateau stretches flat and rust-brown to the skyline.
