Suncheon-siIn Suncheon-si, a river bends gently through a valley framed by low mountains whose slopes carry the mixed greens and first yellows of September. The water's surface mirrors the overcast sky in tones of silver and slate, creating a doubled landscape of extraordinary subtlety. Reed beds line the river's margins, their dried autumn stalks adding warm ochre accents to the predominantly cool palette. Suncheon Bay's inland waterways are part of the larger estuarine ecosystem that has earned the bay Ramsar wetland designation, and even this far upstream the landscape carries the peaceful, horizontal quality of Korea's most celebrated coastal wetland.
