Gangwon-doA hillside fruit orchard in Sonyang spreads across the lower half of the frame, its rows of dormant apple or pear trees stretching their gnarled, pruned branches toward a clear early March sky. The trees are still in their winter state, completely bare, their dark twisted forms creating a repeating pattern across the terraced hillside. Patches of remaining snow sit in the shaded areas between concrete block walls and farm structures on the right, evidence of the stubborn winter that clings to Gangwon-do's interior well into spring. A solar panel array and beehive boxes are visible among the orchard rows, signs of the diversified small-scale farming that characterizes this region. Beyond the orchard, low forested hills fade into a blue haze under the vast open sky, and a traditional Korean building with a colored roof is visible in the middle distance among the trees. The sun is bright and warm despite the lingering cold, creating a lens flare in the upper right that adds a sense of optimism, as if spring is pushing against the last of winter's resistance. This is the Korean rural landscape in transition, the orchards waiting for the first bud break that will transform these skeletal trees into clouds of white and pink blossom within weeks.
