Along Dasan-ro in Yaksu-dong, central Seoul's mid-slope residential district, the crisp October air lends an unusual clarity to the architectural lines of apartment blocks and commercial buildings that step up the hillside in a characteristic Korean urban pattern. The street follows one of the old routes connecting the Cheonggyecheon stream valley to the hilltop neighborhoods of Junggu, a path that predates the modern road grid by centuries. Yaksu-dong takes its name from a medicinal spring that once drew visitors to the area, and the neighborhood retains a quieter, more lived-in character than the commercial districts that surround it. The autumn light arrives from a lower angle than summer, casting longer shadows and picking out surface textures in concrete, brick, and tile that the harsh overhead sun of July would flatten into uniform brightness.
