Photographed at Yeonseo-ro 50-gil, Jingwan-dong, Seoul in August 2024
A cluster of newly built hanok buildings lines the road in Jingwan-dong, their curved gray tile roofs and dark timber frames traditional in form but crisp and clean in their recent construction. Behind them, the rocky granite peaks of Bukhansan National Park rise dramatically against a summer sky dotted with white clouds, the exposed rock faces catching afternoon light above dense green forest cover. A bus stop sign stands in the foreground beside yellow center-line markings on the empty road, grounding the scene in everyday neighborhood life. The juxtaposition is quintessentially Seoul: a brand-new traditional Korean village built at the foot of a 836-meter granite massif, where you can step out of a hanok cafe and be on a serious mountain trail within fifteen minutes. Late August light gives the scene a saturated quality, the blue of the sky intensely deep and the greens of the mountainside almost tropical in their density.
