SeoulFrom an overpass in Noryangjin-dong, southern Seoul, a sprawling railway yard fans out below in a web of parallel steel tracks that converge toward Yongsan Station and central Seoul in the distance. The tracks catch the muted silver light of a spring evening, their metallic surfaces creating thin bright lines against the gravel and concrete of the rail bed. On the far side of the yard, high-rise apartment towers and a prominent dark-clad office building rise in the typical Korean urban formation, their vertical mass contrasting with the horizontal sweep of the rail infrastructure. Stacks of spare rail sections, blue-roofed maintenance buildings, and catenary poles with their overhead power lines add industrial texture to the foreground. The sky is the scene's most dramatic element: heavy cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds build in towering formations across the upper half of the frame, their undersides catching warm evening light while their upper masses remain gray-white, creating the kind of spring weather spectacle that promises either a magnificent sunset or an approaching squall. Noryangjin is one of Seoul's grittier working districts, better associated with the Noryangjin wholesale fish market than any tourist destination, and this view captures the city's unglamorous but essential side: the rail infrastructure that moves millions of people and tons of freight through the capital daily, seen in the contemplative stillness of early evening when the last rush-hour trains have passed and the yard settles into quiet.
