Photographed at Bukchon-ro 5-gil, Samcheong-dong, Seoul in August 2025
Along Bukchon-ro 5-gil in Seoul's Samcheong-dong, a hanok's dark timber frame and lattice windows catch the full weight of August afternoon light, the wood grain deepened to near-black by decades of oiling and weather. The traditional joinery is visible in the bracket sets beneath the curved eave, each interlocking piece carved without nails in the Joseon manner. Above the roofline, a summer sky of clean blue provides crisp contrast to the warm brown tones of the architecture. This stretch of Bukchon preserves the most intact concentration of residential hanok in Seoul, and the summer light reveals textures that winter's flat illumination tends to flatten.
