Photographed at Sejong-daero, Sogong-dong, Seoul in May 2024
Sungnyemun, Seoul's National Treasure No. 1, fills the lower portion of the frame as seen from directly below on Sejong-daero, its double-tiered wooden superstructure and stone archway rising against a flawless May sky. The gate's elaborate dancheong painting, layers of green, red, gold, and blue geometric patterns, is visible in rich detail on the eaves and bracket sets. The curved roof tiles end in ornamental ridge beasts, and a vertical plaque bearing the gate's name in Chinese characters hangs centrally. The upward-looking angle strips away the surrounding traffic and modern buildings, isolating the 600-year-old structure against pure blue sky with just a wisp of white cloud. Built in 1398 and reconstructed after a devastating arson in 2008, Sungnyemun carries enormous symbolic weight as the oldest wooden structure in Seoul and a marker of the city's Joseon Dynasty origins.
