The sweeping metallic skin of Dongdaemun Design Plaza dominates the frame, its thousands of perforated aluminum panels catching the flat February light in subtle gradients of silver and pewter. Designed by Zaha Hadid and completed in 2014, DDP has become Seoul's most recognizable piece of contemporary architecture. Below the curved shell, massive concrete support pillars branch outward in organic Y-shapes, and a faint purple glow emanates from the covered walkway where visitors pass through. The portrait orientation emphasizes the building's impossible scale, the curved surface filling the upper two-thirds of the frame like the hull of some landed spacecraft. Winter visitors in dark coats add human scale at the base, tiny against the neo-futuristic structure that has redefined the Dongdaemun skyline.
