Photographed at Bukpyeong-myeon in November 2024
A mountain trail in Bukpyeong-myeon reveals the late autumn character of Gangwon Province's interior highlands, where the forest transitions from deciduous to mixed conifer at around 700 meters elevation. The November sky is the particular shade of steel blue that appears between autumn weather systems, when the air has been scoured clean by a passing cold front. Dead leaves on the trail surface have been compressed by foot traffic into a natural paving that crunches underfoot. The surrounding ridgelines show the characteristic pattern of Korean mountain autumn: dark green bands of pine and fir alternating with the bare gray of oak and birch, creating a camouflage-like pattern across the slopes.
