A wooden stairway climbs steeply through a grove of spring-leafing deciduous trees toward a stone fortress gateway at Yeonhwabong peak in Goyang-si's Bukhansan area, its weathered wooden handrails and plank steps cutting a diagonal line through the bright green canopy. The trees flanking the stairs - a mix of birch, oak, and other native species - have reached the translucent stage of early May foliage where their leaves are fully formed but still thin enough to glow when backlit by the sun, creating a luminous overhead canopy in shades of lime green and yellow-green. At the top of the stairs, a stone archway built from precisely cut granite blocks marks the entrance through the old fortress wall - part of the Bukhansanseong fortification system that once protected the northern approach to Seoul. The stonework is characteristic of Joseon-era military architecture: large, interlocking blocks with minimal mortar, fitted together with remarkable precision. The contrast between the organic curves of the tree branches, the geometric regularity of the wooden stairs, and the massive solidity of the stone gateway creates a compelling layered composition that moves from nature to human craft to military architecture. Dappled sunlight plays across the path, adding warmth and visual texture to the scene.
