Rangárþing eystra, IcelandAcross a dry meadow edged by a rope fence and a wooden bench, Skógafoss spills over a dark ledge between two grassy hills. Its white water is wide at the lip and loses itself in mist at the base. The right hill carries a thin red-brown staircase climbing to a viewing platform where tiny silhouettes stand against the sky. Small groups of walkers cross the flat ground near the waterfall. The hills glow in muted gold and olive, and the cloudy sky above is a uniform, cool gray. The left hill is darker, with rocky outcrops and patches of green near the base.
