Gwacheon-siDusk on Gwanaksan's western ridge in Daehak-dong reduces the mountain trail to a study in silhouette and negative space, the October sky behind it holding a concentrated band of deep amber that grades upward through peach into a clear twilight blue. The mountain's rocky outcrops and pine tree profiles create an irregular skyline that reads like a traditional Korean ink painting, the organic forms of nature rendered in pure black against the luminous ground of the sky. Gwanaksan's granite is part of the same Jurassic batholith that underlies much of Seoul's mountainous terrain, and in silhouette these formations reveal the dramatic geology that is hidden by forest during daylight hours. The image captures the aesthetic of the Korean mountain tradition, where the interplay of solid and void is as important as the mountain itself.
