Gwacheon-siNear the Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town on Gwanaksan's southern slope, the October sunset spills over the hills in a broad wash of amber and pale rose, the administrative city of Gwacheon-si visible in the valley below as a neat grid of apartment complexes and government buildings. Gwacheon, home to several government ministries that relocated from central Seoul in the 1980s, sits in a natural bowl between Gwanaksan and Cheonggyesan, and at sunset the surrounding mountains funnel the warm light directly into the valley like a golden amphitheater. The trail here descends through a transitional zone where mountain forest meets urban edge, and autumn hikers descending at this hour are treated to a view that juxtaposes wild nature above with planned modernity below.
