Kyoto, JapanNear Nawate-dori in Kyoto's Higashiyama Ward, a slim canal runs straight back between stone walls and old buildings. On the left, restaurant balconies with white railings are lit by small spotlights, and air-conditioning units cling to the plaster walls. Orange and red maple leaves hang over the water on the right, mixed with dark green shrubs and thin bare twigs. The stream is black and rippled, catching only a few scattered lights. A low bridge crosses at the far end, where car lights and a pale building glow faintly through the branches.
