Kyoto, JapanA narrow canal in Kyoto's Higashiyama Ward flows past the backs of wooden houses at night. Bare branches of a large tree sweep across the upper frame, and long willow strands hang down on the left edge. Lamplight from the buildings breaks into bright ripples on the dark water, while a small mossy patch sits in the middle of the channel. A stone retaining wall rises on the right, topped with clipped shrubs whose leaves show a touch of rust red. Far down the canal, warm windows and a few distant lights fade into the dusk under a cloudy blue sky.
