Otaru, JapanDusk settles over the Otaru Canal in Hokkaido, and the still water holds a long reflection of clouds and a row of glowing lamps. A cobbled promenade runs along the left bank, where small groups stand and walk beside a low stone wall. Dark evergreens and hotel buildings with lit windows crowd the far side of the path. On the right, a pale warehouse with a gabled roof sits behind a thick wall of ivy, its lower wall warmed by lamplight. Beyond the bridge at the end of the canal, a forested hill rises under heavy grey cloud with a faint orange band along the horizon.
