Sea & CoastOff the coast of Gimnyeong-ro in northeastern Jeju, the sea stretches in graduated layers of blue beneath a high overcast sky. The water nearest the shore holds a milky turquoise tone created by the white sand and coral fragments that distinguish this stretch from Jeju's darker basalt beaches. A faint line of surf traces the reef edge several hundred meters out. The May afternoon light diffuses evenly across the surface, eliminating harsh shadows and lending the entire scene a soft, contemplative quality that belies the powerful currents running beneath.
