Midnight along Haemajihaean-ro on Jeju's northeastern coast, where the East China Sea disappears into absolute darkness beyond a scatter of harbor lights and the faint silhouettes of breakwater structures. The October night is windless, and the water's surface lies flat enough to mirror the few artificial light sources along the shore. Jeju's coastal roads are among the most atmospheric drives in Korea after dark, when the island's volcanic coastline becomes an exercise in negative space, the black basalt cliffs and dark ocean merging into a single void punctuated only by the intermittent sweep of a distant lighthouse.
